A Weekend of Celebration and Tragedy
This past Saturday was an exciting day. Tens of thousands — maybe hundreds of thousands — of Georgia Bulldog fans gathered on campus to celebrate the football team’s second National Championship in a row.
A parade, a special Dawg Walk, and a celebration ceremony capped off an exhilarating season. Among those honored on Saturday were offensive lineman Devin Willock and team staff member Chandler LeCroy.
A few hours later, the same fanbase would mourn the loss of Willock and LeCroy in a car accident that left another player and another staff member injured.
The excitement of Saturday turned into shock and grief on Sunday. Hearing about other players rushing to the scene to check on their teammates and team staff is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.
We often talk about the Georgia Bulldogs being a family. This weekend we celebrated as a family, and now we mourn as a family.
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
Pray for the Willock and LeCroy families, for the team and UGA Athletic Department, and for their friends.
