Supernatural Powers
I don’t know what it was, but something reminded me of an obscure show from the 80s the other day. Misfits of Science was a quirky series about a group of people with supernatural powers - including Courteney Cox playing a telekinetic teen in her first television role.
Misfits of Science was fun and clever, and it was perfect for its time. And it had one of the most underrated theme songs of the decade.
Unfortunately, it only lasted one season, which is a shame, because I think Misfits of Science tapped into a nearly universal longing. At some time or another, we all wish we had supernatural power.
Think about it: we’re fascinated by people who claim they can do things outside the realm of human possibility. Consider Uri Geller and how much money he made claiming to bend spoons with his mind. He finally admitted it was an illusion, but he continued to make money.
We like to think of ourselves as exceptional sometimes. How often do we see memes and t-shirts that highlight how special our professions are: “I’m ____________. What’s your superpower?”
Let’s face it: we’re all pretty ordinary when it comes to our own human power. But if you’re a believer in Jesus, you’ve got something that nearly everybody craves: power from a supernatural source.
Just before he ascended into Heaven, Jesus told His disciples:
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Acts 1:8 (ESV)
At Eastridge, we’ve been going through the book of Acts and exploring what it means that Jesus gave His disciples - and us - the power to share the Gospel with everyONE. (Click on the graphic to watch the messages from this series.)
How encouraging is it to know that we have the same Holy Spirit in us that Jesus promised His followers? What comfort and courage can we take from knowing that God has given us the power to share His lifechanging message?
How will you use your supernatural power today?
