Last week, I listened to a podcast in which Alisa Childers interviewed author Jean E. Jones about her Bible study Finding Hope in the Psalms. It’s a women’s study, so needless to say, I won’t be buying the book 🤣, but her idea of writing your own psalms intrigued me.
Jones talks about writing psalms of praise, lament, and wisdom, and she explains about how writing your prayers in the form of psalms can help revitalize your prayer life.
Now, the psalms we write don’t carry the level of canonicity or authority of the scriptures, but they can be a powerful way to turn your prayers into creative expressions. Here’s my first one.
The Unchanging One
God, You are unchanging
You are always good
You are always righteous
You are always perfect
The world tries to deny You and wants to shut down those who love You
But You won’t change or shrink back
Because Your goodness never changes
It never relents or recedes
Your glory will never fade or weaken
Your righteousness will never fall to the whims of fashion
Your love for me never changes either
You saved me in spite of my sin
And You chose me for Your purposes
For this I will ever praise Your name
You alone will receive my worship and honor
I will remain in awe of Your unchanging glory
For You are the Unchanging One
That’s just my initial attempt. Hopefully I’ll get better at it as I write more of them.
